PG&E to raise average monthly bill nearly $5 next month

The monthly gas and electric bill for the average Pacific Gas and Electric Co. residential customer is set to rise $4.80 starting Oct. 1 as a result of recent decisions by state utility regulators.

PG&E is implementing rate increases to fund improvements to its gas transmission and storage system and cover costs from the company’s response to natural events in 2016 and 2017 — but not the deadly wildfires its power lines caused. These are among several rate increases PG&E has requested or recently imposed.

The California Public Utilities Commission approved the gas rate hike last week and the electric rate increase in May. On the gas side, the changes translate to an extra $1.73 on the bill of an average residential customer, and on the electric side, the impact amounts to an additional $3.07 for the same kind of customer, according to PG&E.

The average gas and electric residential bill is currently about $173, according to the company.
