Delaware budget lawmakers face $167M less to spend

State government could be in a budget crunch, with about $167 million less to spend next year and costs continuing to rise, a state panel said Monday.

The projections from the Delaware Economic and Financial Advisory Council could change over the coming months, but some officials say the estimates show the state leaders elected this November will have hard choices to make.

"I think the result of today's meeting is really a wake-up call to the next General Assembly and the next administration," said Secretary of Finance Tom Cook.

DEFAC is a group of officials and economists who study the state's economic outlook and project how much money state government will collect in taxes, fees and other sources.
