Chevy Chase's American City Diner Closes After 30 Years.
It was one of D.C.’s few true diners.
'One of the D.C. area’s sources for all-day breakfast just closed its doors. After more than 30 years in business, Upper Northwest’s American City Diner is now closed. The retro-style diner served up blue plate specials on Connecticut Avenue.
A Facebook message from American City Diner reads: “Thank you so much to all of our longtime customers and the amazing community of Chevy Chase, DC for your support over the past 30+ years. It’s been a privilege serving you but the time has come for the American City Diner to close its doors. We will forever be grateful to Jeffrey Gildenhorn for bringing this beloved institution to Connecticut Ave.”
Owner Gildenhorn passed away last year, and his niece Dana Wancjer told NBC4 that the family decided to close the business after difficulties bringing enough money in, especially in light of electrical problems that kept the restaurant closed recently. “It was our biggest wish that we kept this going for as long as we could and we hope we did him proud,” she told NBC4. “It’s so heartwarming to know that it touched so many people.”
Update: The retro diner’s already changed hands. Washington Business Journal reports that restaurateur Steve Salis is the new owner, but the details are scant on what the force behind Ted’s Bulletin, Kramerbooks and Afterwords Cafe, and Federalist Pig has in store for this building.'
