Graphic Designers Have Ideas For New Logos For Washington's NFL Team

https://dcist.com/story/20/07/13/graphics-designers-have-ideas-for-new-logos-for-washingtons-nfl-team/

Washington’s football team is retiring its name, a racial slur for Native Americans. The logo will go, too. The news comes during a national reckoning on racial inequality and after corporate sponsors pushed the team to modify its branding.

The question now is what the new name and logo will be. The team hasn’t given much insight into how it will make that decision, though the Washington Post reported today that the front-runner for the new name is “held up by trademark issues.”

In a statement, the team said owner Dan Synder and coach Ron Rivera “are working closely to develop a new name and design approach that will enhance the standing of our proud, tradition rich franchise and inspire our sponsors, fans and community for the next 100 years.”

Fans, graphic designers and members of the public have been proposing alternative names and logos for years. Behance, a social media platform that showcases creative design work, is full of ideas.

James Lewis, a Texan and Dallas Cowboys fan, designed a package around the Redtails, a nickname for the Black World War II aviators known as the Tuskegee Airmen. The airmen’s planes had distinctive red-painted tails.

I like Red Tails. Red Hawks and Red Wolves are also great. The pictures are at the link

This are the lyrics to hail to the redskins, so it should be a simple one syllable swap

Hail to the Redskins!
Hail Victory!
Braves on the Warpath!
Fight for old D.C.!
Run or pass and score—We want a lot more!
Beat 'em, Swamp 'em,
Touchdown! -- Let the points soar!
Fight on, fight on 'Til you have won
Sons of Wash-ing-ton. Rah!, Rah!, Rah!
Hail to the Redskins!
Hail Victory!
Braves on the Warpath!
Fight for old D.C.!

2. Gonna be warriors I think

We’ll see.

They might surprise me and go with Washington Racists.

The red wolf one is so cool but we don’t have them here. We have tons of red foxes.

Maybe that doesn’t matter though.

4. Here's why I disagree:

"Warriors" is already the name of another pro sports team.
"Warriors" has negative connotations to many people who believe war should not be glorified, etc.
"Warriors" can be perceived as linked to indigenous people also, which I think should be avoided. For example, some argue that "Braves" is inappropriate even though it appears to be positive, for this reason. For example, look at this comment by Doc Walker and how he associates it with arrows, which obviously refers to Native Americans (who else went "on the warpath" with arrows?).

https://sports.yahoo.com/former-redskin-doc-walker-believes-205403339.html

"The Warriors. It's so easy," Walker told NBC Sports Washington. "All you have to do is put the arrow back on the helmet. You don't have to change anything else. Warriors on the warpath, fight for old D.C. It's that simple."

The other options in this thread don't have those connotations and could easily generate great logos.

6. I know, but Snyder owns it already

He’s cheap. It’s easy.

I’d be happier with a more original one, absolutely.

Not sea dogs!

9. Yes, but he's getting a lot of outside pressure

and it would be dumb to choose a name that people would have problems with only to have to change it again. Of course, dumb is what Danny boy does best.

7. Wombats. It's alliterative.

And it’s therefore a good match for the Wizards (formerly the Bullets NBA franchise).

11. About the trademark issues

the squatters may have nothing legally if they haven't used it in commerce

13. This thread kind of reminds me....

.... of someone who has been offended demanding a public apology, but after accepting the public apology, decides to go ahead beat the shit out of the other person anyway.🤔
