April outlook: Temperatures to bounce around with plentiful showers.
We expect near normal temperatures and above normal rainfall.
April often features lingering bits of winter and early bursts of summery warmth. This April looks to play the part — delivering frequent temperatures swings while also offering more rainfall to give those May flowers a boost.
We expect near normal temperatures thanks to the back and forth variability. Last April’s average temperature of 58.2 degrees was exactly normal, and we think we may come close to that again this year, with the average somewhere between 56 and 60 degrees. We project about 3.5 to 5 inches of rain compared with the normal of 3.21 inches.
On the heels of wintry temperatures at the start of this week, the big question is: Are we done with frosts and freezes?
Based on the past two decades, the answer seems to be “yes” for the District and areas inside the Beltway and “no” for our outer western to northwestern suburbs. Here are the dates of our average last freeze and latest freeze since 2000:>
