DeSamtis IS REMOVING Free Speech from Universities because the only "diversity" they need is white

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2021/jun/24/ron-desantis-florida-governor-bill-indoctrination-colleges

The new law requires colleges and universities to conduct an annual survey measuring “intellectual freedom and viewpoint diversity” on their campuses. It’s an effort to gauge “the extent to which competing ideas and perspectives are presented”, as well as how free students, faculty and staff feel “to express their beliefs and viewpoints”, the bill says.

....

But critics fear the assessment will instead end up intimidating teachers, chilling free speech and disproportionately representing the perspectives of those who feel aggrieved. They are also concerned the data could be wielded to punish faculty or universities.

At DeSantis’s behest, Florida’s board of education also recently banned educators from teaching critical race theory, which analyzes racism as a systemic, persistent part of American life and has been weaponized by Republicans who say teaching about oppression in this form is divisive. The board similarly barred materials connected to the New York Times’s 1619 Project, a widely lauded effort that focuses on slavery’s consequences as well as Black Americans’ contributions.

Does anyone know what that actually means? Are educators banned from labeling certain ideas as a part of critical race theory? Are they banned from making specific statements? Are they banned from teaching certain historical facts? Or, are they just subject to some type of disciplinary action if someone claims that they made a statement that can be placed under the umbrella of critical race theory?

Most of us were not taught that the police systems started as slave patrols in some areas. Nor was it stressed that police only protected rich white people. And to be fair, that wasn't country wide and there are police departments that work hard to be the thin blue line between the community and criminal activity.

What is difficult is even having worked with the 5th Precinct in Minneapolis as a block leader many years ago, I NEVER knew about how Chauvin was racking up 18 police brutality accusations that the union swept under the rug so that he was still on the force when he murdered George Floyd on the street in front of everyone with a crazy grin in his eyes.

There ARE good police officers, but the system is a good place to hide murderous white supremacists too.

The new rules say classroom instruction “must be factual and objective, and may not suppress or distort significant historical events.” It goes on to mention the Holocaust, slavery and the Civil War, as well as the civil rights movement and the contributions of Blacks, Hispanics and women to the country.

But it also makes specific mention of “theories that distort historical events” that are inconsistent with board policy, including any teaching that denies the Holocaust or espouses critical race theory, which the new rules say asserts “that racism is not merely the product of prejudice, but that racism is embedded in American society and its legal systems in order to uphold the supremacy of white persons.”

I think they will have to be careful. I mean generally, there are a lot of laws on the books that are no longer relevant, maybe they can talk about how we need to "outgrow" any system that allows racism to be used against people vs saying ALL the laws are basically racist, which is what DeSantis equates "critical race theory" with - as if you say there are systems in place that hold people back due to race, that it teaches children that America is a racist country - period. He doesn't leave any room to look at specific systems and how they can be improved.

DeSantis is equating ANY dissent as calling America completely racist and that will not be tolerated.

If you watched how they went through the jurors on Chauvin's trial, people basically said they were open minded and would base their decision on what was presented at the trial.

So educators may have to put themselves out there as more "CENTRIST" and showing HOW laws CAN be used by unscrupulous people to meet an agenda that promotes whites VS that the laws were designed that way.

They will have to talk around it a bit so that they don't lose FUNDING for the school or their jobs.

classroom instruction “must be factual and objective, and may not suppress or distort significant historical events.”

Start with Black history, and you'll get plenty of white history, too. Same with women's history. Start there, and whadayaknow, you get men's history, too.

Bummer so many white people are terrified they'll be treated the way they've always treated others, isn't it?

Typically at Law School. It. is. not. taught. at. k-12.

Most of the laws about Critical Race Theory, a framework for examining how race informed and influenced our legal system and governing mechanisms. Those who cling to white supremacy and believe their genetic melanin aberration makes them "better than" can not handle the truth. They benefit from a racist system, whether they are overtly racist or not. The fact they can not define Critical Race Theory, and instead create a three letter acronym (chant) as code for You're not Us kind of shows how averse to factual history they are.

Anyone who says their child is being "indoctrinated" with "CRT" in 3rd grade should be congratulated for their 8 year old qualifying for law school.

I love that last paragraph. I don't believe that white people are afraid of being treated the way they treated others. Many of them don't even acknowledge or believe they treated anyone poorly. It isn't only the blacks. Look what was done to the Native Americans or the Japanese or anyone who wasn't lily-white. And this comes from someone who is quite Caucasian. The Satan is evil and all we can do is hope that enough people see it and never elect someone like that as Governor again.

So what happens to these "surveys"? Where do they go?
DeSantis knows damn well that educational - proper and truthful education - is not a good thing for Lukaschenko wannabes like him.
Take the failed economic policies of the right - clearly they have been debunked by any reasonable academic study over the years, yet they continue to push this garbage. So if an Economics professor reveals trickle-down as the failed experiment that it is, does the Prof lose their job?
And what about Tulsa, or the 1619 project? This is a critical part of American history, as is the brutality of slavery which is often whitewashed in favor of sepia-toned photographs of how white men fought against each other in the Civil War "to free the slaves".
Florida, going back to the Jeb Bush days, has been after public education for quite awhile now.
Now, Governor Lukashenko will codify the process. All students, faculty, and staff of Florida universities and colleges will now register with the state - a state firmly under the control of the new good ol boy network, the Florida GOP.
Back in the 60's and into the 70's, campuses were the ground zero of dissent and protest. If only.

Basically said, if this doesn't horrify you, you aren't paying attention.

Voting is supposed to be an elemental right of "We The People" in a Democracy and it is supposed to be a private thing, which is why we had ballot boxes and/or screens so we can fill out our ballots in privacy.

Education is supposed to be broad and cover a variety of perspectives with as much factual data to analyze as humanly possible to net the best results.

To teach people HOW to think vs WHAT to think should be the goal.
