A book challenge at a Hillsborough County middle school has attracted the attention of a leading Republican lawmaker who is concerned about reading materials that critics call “obscene.”
Florida House Speaker Paul Renner, R-Palm Coast, announced Friday that he has requested records from Hillsborough County public school officials regarding reading materials available in school libraries.

Renner’s request for information about the district’s book review practices comes amid a challenge at Pierce Middle School to “This Book is Gay,” a non-fiction work about sexuality and gender by Juno Dawson. The Amazon website describes the book as a “candid, funny, and uncensored exploration of sexuality and what it’s like to grow up LGBTQ.”
The initial challenge came from an elementary parent from another school and then was joined by another parent who is active in the library book issue, said Superintendent Addison Davis, who received Renner’s requet for information late Thursday.
