Parkland school shooter Nikolas Cruz to receive large inheritance; public defender must withdraw from case
Parkland school shooter Nikolas Cruz has received a recent cash windfall, leading his public defenders to seek withdrawal from his death penalty case, court records show.
It has come to the attention of undersigned counsel that Nikolas Cruz is a beneficiary in a MetLife life insurance policy and is entitled to half of a death benefit valued at $864,929 as of April 23, a motion filed Wednesday by his Broward County public defenders states.
The defendant and undersigned counsel were previously unaware of this entitlement, the filing reads. The Public Defender is statutorily prohibited from representing a non-indigent defendant.
Cruzs mother died in November 2017, leaving behind Cruz and a brother.
