Austin Stephanos and Perry Cohen vanished during a boating trip in 2015.

JUPITER, Fla. (CBS12) — This week four years ago, a fishing boat that once carried 14-year-old boys Austin Stephanos and Perry Cohen out to sea was found by the U.S. Coast Guard without the boys aboard.

At the time, it was the latest development in a national drama to find the missing Tequesta teens.

Two days before the boat was found, on July 24, 2015, Austin and Perry left the Jupiter inlet aboard a 19-foot Seacraft boat as a storm brewed.

When Austin did not check in with his mother for hours, the Cohen family called the police, prompting a massive search effort to find the two boys.

“They are going to find them. He's out there. They are both safe. They are strong boys,” Austin’s mother, Carly Black, told CBS12 News during the search efforts.

Family search efforts were called off in August 2015. The boys are still considered “missing” by the National Database for Missing and Exploited Children.
