Richard Swann, 'godfather of Democratic fundraising in Florida,' dies at 79

Richard Swann, a key Democratic Party fundraiser and former finance chair for President Jimmy Carter who bounced back from a savings and loan collapse in 1990, died Wednesday after suffering a heart attack at his law office in Winter Park.

Swann, whom longtime political consultant Dick Batchelor called “the godfather of Democratic fundraising in Florida," was 79.

“We are saddened by the sudden loss of our incredible father and grandfather, Richard Swann,” his family said in a statement. “He dedicated his life to his family, the practice of law and serving his beloved Central Florida community. For over 40 years, he thrived in the political arena and relished participating in our democracy."

Swann grew up in Orlando and began his long career as a fundraiser by backing his friend Bill Gunter’s races for the Florida Legislature in 1966, the U.S. House in 1972 and the U.S. Senate in 1974.
