GA Secretary of State Blocks 40,000 From Voting for No Apparent Reason

Last edited Thu Oct 16, 2014, 11:03 AM - Edit history (1)

It's important to note here that these registrations were all submitted by the Oct 6th deadline. This is not a partisan issue, even though Democrats, minorities, are the ones being denied here, this is about the right to vote. Brian Kemp is denying Georgians their Constitutional Right to Vote.

Update 10/16:

Kemp says ‘missing’ voters accounted for in Georgia: http://www.ajc.com/news/news/state-regional-govt-politics/kemp-says-missing-voters-accounted-for-in-georgia/nhkSH/

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Secretary of State Brian Kemp on Thursday blasted accusations that his office has failed to help thousands of voters register to vote, saying “we should not have to waste valuable resources on a frivolous lawsuit.” It’s the first time Kemp has commented since the national Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights filed suit against him and five Georgia counties last week, asking a state judge to make sure more than 55,000 people will be able to vote in the Nov. 4 election.

Kemp, however, said his office has now confirmed nearly 40,000 of those voters are active and on the rolls despite accusations to the contrary.

More than 50,000 of the paper forms submitted by the group seemed to be lost in the state’s voting system, Lawyers’ Committee attorney Julie Houk said last week. They neither appeared on voter rolls nor did they show up on lists of “pending” voters who have been asked to provide more information to verify who they are, she said.

An additional 5,000 of the forms appeared on pending lists, but Houk said some of the forms showed the information originally submitted — such as the last four digits of a person’s Social Security number — to be accurate. In other words, the Lawyers’ Committee questioned why these voters must provide additional proof of identification.

The applications were part of an overall registration drive that resulted in more than 85,000 new applications to the state’s voter system.

Voter Registration Drive in Georgia Leads to Lawsuit
By Cameron McWhirter

ATLANTA—With a little over three weeks to go before elections in close races for U.S. Senate and governor, an escalating fight between Georgia’s Republican secretary of state and a Democratic-leaning voter registration group is moving to court.

Third Sector Development Inc., the parent nonprofit of the New Georgia Project that has been working to register minority voters, has filed suit in Fulton County Superior Court against Secretary of State Brian Kemp and five county election boards, claiming officials have failed to process tens of thousands of voter applications ahead of the Nov. 4 vote. The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People joined the suit, which calls on the court to force the secretary of state and the boards to speed up processing the applications.

---

The Rev. Raphael Warnock, Ebenezer’s senior pastor and the project’s spokesman, called the secretary of state’s position “cavalier and cynical,” saying the group filed a lawsuit “because we felt we had no other choice.”

“This is not a cat-and-mouse game,” he said. “We are talking about people’s right to vote.”
