Hawaii State Hospital Wasn't Built For The Type Of Patients It Serves
The Hawaii State Hospital was not built for patients like Randall Saito, and yet almost all of its current occupants are there by court order.
Saito, who was acquitted of a 1979 murder by reason of insanity, escaped the hospital Sunday, triggering a three-day manhunt that grabbed national and international headlines.
On Wednesday morning, Saito was arrested in Stockton, California. An investigation is now underway to find out how he managed to walk out of the Kaneohe facility, catch a taxi, then hop aboard a chartered flight to Maui and a commercial flight to California all before he was reported missing to authorities.
I think its pretty clear
that this was premeditated, it was intentional, it was planned, said Hawaii Attorney General Doug Chin, who is spearheading the investigation.
