Indianapolis will retain mask mandate despite governor ending its version, mayor says
Two days after Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb announced he would end the state mask mandate the first week of April, Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett said that the county’s mask mandate will stand for now.
Hogsett said it was too early for Marion County, the most populous county in the state, to abolish its mask mandate, citing the many out-of-state visitors coming over the next two weeks for March Madness basketball.
In addition, he said that the county’s business capacity restrictions would also remain.
For the past few weeks, the county’s top health official Dr. Virginia A. Caine, director of the Marion County Public Health Department has said that she’s more worried about spring break travel leading to an uptick in cases than the events around the men’s basketball tournament.
When Holcomb announced that the mandate would end April 6, he said that local officials would still be welcome to put in place more stringent requirements.
