How Iowa Democrats plan to win more statehouse seats

DES MOINES, Iowa (Gray Television Iowa Capitol Bureau) - While the presidential election is taking up most of the headlines in 2024, Iowa Democrats are urging voters not to forget state legislative races.

All but one statewide office is held by Republicans. The entire Iowa Congressional Delegation is Republican. They hold supermajorities in the legislature too.

House Minority Leader Jennifer Konfrst maintains that Iowa isn’t a red state. “You know, Iowa is more purple than it looks. We had a lot of folks stay home in 2022. There’s no way to do that this time, so if folks are mad about AEAs, reproductive freedom, public education, we’re encouraging them to engage with their legislator,” Konfrst said.

Cornell College Political Science Professor Megan Goldberg says Iowa can appear redder than it is. “Just because Democrats lose elections in this winner takes all system, that sort of masks how many democrats there really are and I think she’s sort of hoping that when we get down to a more granular level and we’re looking at House districts and statehouse districts that you can get a lot more a lot more democratic representation,” Goldberg said.
