Speech First lawsuit against Iowa State University dismissed

The lawsuit filed against Iowa State University officials by a nationwide free speech advocacy group was dismissed this week, after the university earlier changed the policies at the center of the case.

The lawsuit filed by Speech First Inc. was dismissed Thursday. It was filed in January in U.S. District Court in Des Moines.

In the lawsuit, Speech First alleged ISU’s policies violated students’ First Amendment and 14th Amendment rights. The group claimed three of the policies, a ban on chalking, a prohibition on student emails related to campaigns and elections, and a Campus Climate Reporting System (CCRS), encroached on students’ free speech.

The CCRS is comprised of ISU faculty and staff who meet throughout the year to plan and implement strategies to develop responses to bias, harassment and discrimination on campus, according to the ISU website.
