Former state senator disciplined by Louisiana Supreme Court
Elbert Guillory, the former state senator, congressional candidate and Republican raconteur, was reprimanded by the Louisiana Supreme Court for neglecting the case of a woman seeking help for her handicapped son.
“This matter occurred when I was in the Legislature when my hands were full, maybe a little too full,” Guillory said Tuesday evening from his Opelousas law office.
The high court’s order stated that Guillory “acknowledges that he neglected his client’s legal matter” and accepted the court’s discipline. He agreed to pay costs and expenses. Guillory, 73, said the costs are about $150. "It's my understanding they (the complaining clients) are satisfied with this outcome," he said.
Guillory was elected to the Louisiana House in 2007. He was elected a state senator in a special election in 2009 and served until January 2016.
An African-American politician, Guillory made something of splash in 2013 as a featured guest on national shows hosted by Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh and other conservative talk shows after a video of his was viewed more than a million times. Standing in an empty state Senate Chamber, Guillory said in the video that he switched to the Republican Party because the “Democrats were the party of Jim Crow.”
