I agree, Petfinder is ideal. You can specify breed and age and those available in your area: Rhiannon12866 Nov 2020 #7

Check your humane society or rescue society. We've gotten anything from a pitta mix to a
lab/border collie mix to a lab/boxer mix. Mutts are the best dogs and rescue dogs are the
very best. Good luck.

The very best dog I ever had. The seriousness of the collie tones down the goofiness of the setter. Fantastic with kids because they play with the kids as well as guarding their territory. Loving.

Pet finder is not just a fly by night site. They are strictly rescue dogs be it mixed or purebred. They have the same rules as a shelter and sometimes stricter to assure they are going to a good home. Just put in where you are and how far you are willing to travel to get you new friend and you will get a lot of rescues presented to you.

I didn't want to go to a regular shelter because they neuter them way too young. On Petfinder I found my girl from a rescuer who had been bottle-feeding her after rejection by her cat mom. I was able to spay her at six months instead of two. I think dogs and cats need those hormones for a while. Plus, it the rescuer only charged me $30 (I gave her $50) and the shelter would have been much more expensive.
