As we've all heard by now, two broods of cicadas will be emerging in mid-May.

This will be the first time since 1803 that two broods have emerged at the same time! But where exactly in the Southern Maryland region will these pesky insects hang out?

According to Cicada Mania, the two broods, Brood XIII and Brood XIX, are expected to emerge in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia.

In an interview with FOX 5, Michael Raupp from the University of Maryland’s Entomology Department stated that we may see some cicadas emerge in the southern parts of St. Mary’s County. The immediate Washington D.C. area is somewhat safe for now as no cicadas are expected to emerge.

The only area that is expected to host both broods together is central Illinois. So don’t worry, there shouldn’t be a huge amount in our area.

Since it’s been 220 years since these two broods have met, scientists are extremely curious to see what affects this event may have such as the possibility of interbreeding.>>>

3. In my area, they will be so thick that they will be pelting my face every time I go outside.

People use shop vacs to clear them off the sidewalks. Even driving is a hazard as your windshield will be struck by a couple dozen per minute. Like driving through a storm of dark, squishy hailstones. And the noise is like living on an airport runway.

The good news is that it only lasts a week or two.

2. pesky? Safe for now? Dont worry?

Do they think these are venomous biting spiders? Some kind of vicious centipedes? Whoever wrote this needs to get out in nature more! Those cicadas are so wonderful and they do so much for the health of the forests and the critters that eat the bugs. Their tunnels can be as long as six feet deep and allow air to get deep into the roots of the trees, allowing better root respiration. The calories they store provide energy for the birds and other animals that eat them, giving them a boost in nutrition.

4. I don't understand all the fuss over cicadas. They make some noise for a couple weeks, they

are totally harmless. They do some harm to young trees and to small branches on larger ones. I think
the tree trimming actually stimulates growth the next year. The biggest problem I have seen is damage from
ground moles the year before they emerge. I was born on a cicada year 1948 in these parts, so I have survived
5 invasions in my lifetime. I hope to be alive to experience them again at 85 in 2033.
