BOSTON —The company that operates the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority commuter rail service says it lost nearly $20 million during the first half of the year.

The Boston Globe reports Keolis Commuter Services released financial figures Friday indicating that it lost $19.4 million during that timeframe. That's nearly double what it lost from the previous six-month period.

Company spokeswoman Leslie Aun says the bulk of the losses stem from the record-breaking snowstorms that hit the region last winter. Those expenses included higher-than-expected overtime for employees and costs for utilities.

She also cited penalties the company paid to the MBTA for subpar service. She blames aging trains, rails and other equipment that was already in place when the company took over the commuter rail service in July 2014.
