Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities halts statewide pipeline work by Columbia Gas

BOSTON -- Columbia Gas was ordered Friday to cease all work, except for emergency and compliance work, across its service territories in the state.

The Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities ordered Columbia Gas to impose the work moratorium until at least December 1, 2018.

Columbia Gas provides natural gas to 65 communities in its Lawrence, Brockton, and Springfield service areas. The company has infrastructure upgrade projects ongoing across the state, which will presumably come to a halt.

The order will not impede emergency restoration work in the Merrimack Valley, according to a release from Gov. Charlie Baker's Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs.
