Fall River Mayor Jasiel Correia should 'step aside' after arrest, Mass. Gov. Charlie Baker says

Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker believes Fall River Mayor Jasiel Correia should "step aside" after the 26-year-old politician was arrested and charged with fraud, a spokesman for the governor's campaign said Friday.

Correia, a Democrat who was the youngest person elected mayor in Fall River's history three years ago, had crossed party lines and endorsed Baker and running mate Lt. Gov. Karyn Polito, both on the Republican ticket for re-election. The Baker campaign stripped his endorsement from its website after his Thursday morning arrest.

"Governor Baker and Lt. Governor Polito believe that in light of these serious allegations, Mayor Correia should act in the best interests of the people of Fall River and step aside until the case is resolved," Baker campaign spokesman Terry MacCormack said in an emailed statement.

"Ultimately, it is up to residents and voters to decide who is best fit to lead the city," he added.
