Collecting for charities on road illegal, Michigan AG says, halting fundraiser
Collecting money on the road for charities is illegal, Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette said in a recent opinion, leading to at least one fundraiser cancellation in the state.
The opinion could have an impact on other fundraisers throughout the state, according to the liaison between the Michigan Professional Firefighters Union and the Muscular Dystrophy Association. The MDA receives money from fundraisers that feature boot-toting firefighters collecting funds while standing between passing vehicles. Schuette wrote a July 29 opinion in a letter addressed to Michigan Sen. 2. The city council in Dallas stopped a similar boot-raiser about 10 years ago
that I believe was held by Dallas firefighters. While it seemed like it was a good ploy to raise funds, it became a matter of public safety as it held up traffic at stop lights and contributed to road rage.
