Oakland University officials refute study calling state colleges ‘dropout factories’
Oakland University officials are refuting a recently released report that calls Michigan public universities dropout factories, especially since the study puts the school in Auburn Hills near the top of the list.
The report by Third Way, a nonpartisan research organization in Washington, D.C., says 12 of 15 state public universities would be labeled dropout factories if held to the same criteria as K-12 schools.
Third Way names OU and Wayne State University as particularly poor performers. It says Oakland has a 43 percent graduation rate within six years for first-time, full-time students with federal loans. Another criticism of OU, according to the study: More than one-third of students arent making more than $25,000 six years from high school graduation. Thats what a typical high school graduate earns with no college.
James Lentini, senior vice president for academic affairs and provost, says the study has been criticized by many in higher education. It is particularly because it looks only at traditional students -- those who entered college right out of high school.
