Education groups sue to stop private school funding in Michigan

A coalition of education and parent groups in Michigan filed a lawsuit today to stop the state from providing funding to private schools.

The 13 plaintiffs include the Michigan Association of School Administrators, the Michigan Association of School Boards and the ACLU of Michigan. They are joined by groups representing urban districts, principals, parents and school business officials.

The defendants: the State of Michigan, Gov. Rick Snyder, the Michigan Department of Education and State Superintendent Brian Whiston.

The lawsuit arises out of the state budget that went into effect Oct. 1 that provides up to $2.5 million to reimburse private schools for costs associated with state-mandated requirements. That includes background checks, immunizations and compliance with state building, health and fire codes.
