Bloomfield Hills official who stole yard signs blames the victim in court
It might seem to be petty theft a quick snatch of cardboard and metal worth well under $100 but the millionaire who stood before a Royal Oak judge last week said he grabbed the stuff and stuck it into his Jaguars trunk because it was dangerous.
Worse, the person who put it there is a criminal defense lawyer with experience as a federal prosecutor, and so she should know better, the man told the judge last week.
She blatantly didnt care about public safety (and) she hasnt apologized. I had no intent to steal. I had authority to take her yard signs, the man continued, adding: What if there had been an accident and someone was seriously injured or killed because these signs were illegally placed?
That was how Bloomfield Hills City Commissioner Stuart Sherr pointed blame at a school board candidate whose signs Sherr had stolen. He told the judge that hed acted in the public interest when, last fall before the election, he removed four of the candidates campaign signs. He didnt mention that, nearby, hed left standing the signs of others candidates whom he'd endorsed on his Facebook page.
