Indoor gyms can reopen in Michigan on June 25 under federal judge's order

(WXYZ) — Indoor gyms in Michigan can reopen starting June 25, according to a federal judge in Michigan.

On Friday, U.S. District Court Judge Paul Maloney issued an order saying that indoor gyms can open beginning 12:01 a.m. on June 25. The opinion was part of a lawsuit from the League of Independent Fitness Facilities and Trainers against Gov. Whitmer.

According to the order, while the state had the right to close businesses at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, it can't keep gyms closed now while other businesses are reopened.

"The continued closure of gyms is arbitrary and unreasonable because gyms are basically the only category of businesses that remain closed in Michigan, and because the State has not put forward any scientific data that supports keeping gyms closed while opening other closely similar activities and businesses, such as swimming pools, restaurants and bars, and “personal touch” services like salons," the order read.

“The court is playing a dangerous role it should not play: second-guessing and upending the data-informed decisions that have saved thousands of lives in Michigan. The idea that gyms – with their high levels of heavy respiratory activity, shared indoor spaces, and shared surfaces – might be one of the later businesses to come back online in the midst of this global pandemic is hardly surprising and highly sensible," Gov. Whitmer said in a statement.
