LANSING, MI - Republican Gov. Rick Snyder will have an opportunity to increase the Michigan Supreme Court’s conservative majority in the wake of Justice Diane Hathaway’s departure.
Hathaway, who was nominated by Democrats, will retire on Jan. 21 and is not going to participate in the court’s oral arguments scheduled for this week. Hathaway’s attorney said the justice served notice in late December she would retire. But news of her plan didn’t become public until Monday -- shortly after the Michigan Judicial Tenure Commission filed a formal complaint and called for her interim suspension in light of a federal lawsuit alleging bank fraud and money laundering.
Hathaway’s departure gives the Republican governor a rare opportunity to replace a justice who was nominated by Democrats. Republicans now have a 4-3 majority on the court, but the GOP is likely to have a 5-2 edge after the upcoming appointment.
Snyder’s first selection to fill a vacancy on the Michigan Supreme Court came in early 2011, when he named Brian Zahra to replace Maura Corrigan.

I wonder if Rick could appoint Grover Norquist. Probably not, but he'll appoint Norquist's pick. Tool.

(34 posts)because Its not always a good thing for one party to have that kind of majority in a state. I live in Michigan so I am concerned. I don't really feel one way or the other about the Governor. I do think it was stupid to try and recall him before he was in office for a full year. It didn't get anywhere so.... Our state is a mess right now, especially with the whole right to work thing. I have looked at both sides of that issue and also talked to people on both sides of the fence. I am just a regular out of work joe/josephine (LOL), so the two sides can have at it for all I care. Personally, I have lost interest in a lot of things politically speaking. I have a few items that I stand up for, but all I care about right now is 1. Saving my house and 2. Finding a job. I am also pretty disillusioned by both political parties. There is one subject that is getting left by the wayside right now by both sides, and that is job creation. How can we, as a nation, rebuild an economy if NO ONE is working? I know that my daughter, who is 19, and I cannot find a job within 1 hour of our home right now. Where are all the jobs? Why is no one paying attention to this? I think that both sides are to blame. Damned politicians...

That said, I haven't seen the anti-repuke contingent this motivated in along time. 2014 could be very good for us especially since it will also be gubernatorial race.

(21,086 posts)there are just too many people in public life living high off the hog in Michigan while the citizens and children in this state sit in the cheap seats. An entire city, Detroit, in complete and total shambles.
Shame on all politicals in Michigan for the past 25 years.
