It's pawpaw season in Michigan: What to know about native fruit





(Detroit Free Press) As the folk song lyrics go, when asked where “pretty little Susie” is, the answer is “pickin' up paw-paws, puttin' 'em in her pockets, way down yonder in the paw-paw patch.”

A little-known fruit, the pawpaw is the largest edible fruit native to North America.

And it has roots planted right here in Michigan and 25 other states in the Midwest and down to Florida.

The pawpaw, also called the Michigan banana, Hoosier banana or poor man's banana is unique in shape, size and taste. Its skin is similar to the green of an underripe pear, the shape is oblong or kidney-shaped and its size is that of a large potato. But its edible flesh is where the money is. ................(more)

a friend introduced me to the pawpaw as we strolled through his woods high on the banks looking over the Chesapeake. They grew wild there.
