Minneapolis moves to require hotels to prioritize hiring back laid off workers

A Minneapolis City Council committee unanimously approved an ordinance on Thursday that would require hotels and event centers to give preference to workers they laid off because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

If passed by the full City Council, Minneapolis would follow other cities including Los Angeles, Philadelphia and Baltimore to enact a so-called “right of recall” ordinance that could help thousands of workers in the city.

“For people who have been waiting through this economy and are desperate for it to reopen, having the security that they’re going to get the call when their employer does reopen will put a lot of people at ease,” said Council Member Steve Fletcher, who authored the ordinance.

Workers spoke in favor of the proposal during a public hearing on Thursday, urging the committee to approve it.
