Maple Grove high school hockey program: Sex video? "No comment."

Finally -- it comes out that there might be a "sex video" at the heart of the suspension of more than half of the Maple Grove boys varsity hockey team. It's taken awhile to get to the bottom of it. No police report has been made, and it seems that the school has been busting its butt to handle this somehow.

Don't read the story if you don't want a "boys will be boys" from a parent. :barf:

Even as more than half of the Maple Grove High School boys' hockey team returned to the ice Thursday from suspensions related to an off-the-ice incident, a wave of suspicion and controversy continues to threaten the high-profile program.

At a news conference called Thursday to talk about how to move the team forward, school officials declined to give specifics on what led to the suspension of 13 players last week. When reporters asked Principal Sara Vernig about the purported existence of a sex video stemming from the incident, she said: "I can't answer that. It's part of the investigation.''

She later added, "I'll tell you, personally, it's been devastating and disappointing."

Longtime head coach Gary Stefano called it "by far my worst experience'' in 32 years as a coach. He said references to a purported video called "The Show" had been "brought up." School officials stopped him from answering further, citing privacy laws.

Comments on other sites allege that it was part of a hazing ritual and the young woman may or may not have been aware that she was being taped. Stuff from CityPages implies that this is a yearly tradition -- get a young woman drunk and then videotape sexual encounters with her.

There was no indication of what it might have been. Now, I we know what they were trying to cover up.

Why are team sports such a big deal in high school? I just don't get it.

We hear all this crap about how they "build character" and yet so often we hear stories like this.

Maybe we should ditch all this sports crap, and spend the time and money teaching things like, I don't know, critical thinking, history, citizenship and civics? Stuff that might actually benefit the students, and society?

Just a thought.
