Sexual harassment settlements against Hinds County sheriff to cost taxpayers $330K
A recent media report reveals sexual harassment settlements with the Hinds County sheriff, Victor Mason, will cost taxpayers more than $300,000.
The details of the cost follow the settlement of two lawsuits in January that involved three former sheriff's department employees.
The lawsuit filed by ex-Sgt. Belendia Jones said Mason, from the time he was elected sheriff in November 2015 throughout at least half of 2016, talked in text messages about his desire to have sex with her.
The lawsuit says that when it became clear Jones wasn't interested in a relationship with the sheriff, he demoted her to a records clerk at the Hinds County Detention Center in Raymond.
