New Bloomfield City Council votes to label solar farms a "nuisance"
After a controversial proposal to develop a solar farm in the small Mid-Missouri city of New Bloomfield, the city council voted unanimously to label declare solar farms a "nuisance."
A bill before the city officials listed findings pertaining to negative effects from solar farms, including erosion, fires, reduced property values, and poor aesthetics.
"The city is authorized by state statute to regulate nuisances not only within the city but also within one-half mile from the city limits," Nathan Nickolaus, the city attorney, said in the meeting calling in remotely.
NextEra, one of the world's largest solar energy companies, had laid out its proposed Guthrie Project in Callaway County, which includes New Bloomfield, which was met with harsh criticism from many New Bloomfield residents.
