Pokémon Go game frustrates Nebraska cemetery officials

The Grand Island City Cemetery is among the latest locations of hallowed ground asking to be removed from the Pokémon Go game.

“I just emailed the company and asked that they take us off the map,” said Mark Sands, cemetery superintendent.

Since the smartphone game came out in early July, Sands and his staff have noticed an increase in visitors to the cemetery. Before school started, there were lots of kids walking through the cemetery with their phones. More recently, vehicle traffic has been up, but only in certain locations.

That’s because there are 16 PokéStops and three Pokémon Go gyms in the cemetery, staff said. PokéStops are locations where players can collect items used to capture Pokémon. Gyms are battle locations that can be taken over by Pokémon teams.

3. I read an article about a man who had a Pokémon gym in his yard.

Apparently, unauthorized trespassing wasn't a problem, because the rules encourage players to ask permission before entering private property. But that didn't mean that he didn't have a problem. People were constantly ringing his bell or knocking on his door asking permission to go into his yard.

People can ask to have their property removed from the game, but they shouldn't have to. You should not have to opt out of being pestered by strangers engaged in an activity you never asked to be included in!

The entire concept of the game is wrongheaded.

4. It's definitely wrong to have residential property included in the game.

Cemeteries, places of worship and schools (because of pedophiles) should also be excluded. I'm mixed about parks because of the issues regarding pedophiles, but if they are to be included then only the areas with areas of open viewing should be included.
