Michael Grimm's actions speak louder than words, say body language experts

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Shoulder shrugging, lip licking and stiff hands. Rep. Michael Grimm's posture could provide insight into the congressman's media address last Monday, after he pleaded not guilty to a 20-count indictment on charges ranging from wire fraud to defrauding the United States in connection with his former health food restaurant.
Body language expert Dr. Lillian Glass believes she saw several "signs of deception" in Grimm's speech, as seen in the Staten Island Advance video. "If [Grimm] (R-Staten Island/Brooklyn) was coached going into this speech, he wasn't coached well," she said.
Dr. Glass has analyzed political speeches for a number of media outlets including The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post and The New York Times. She takes note of politicians' vocal inflections, posture and speech content during public addresses in an effort to weed out the truth behind the political rhetoric.
