Term-limits on legislative leadership positions is proposed

By Matthew McKibben

The Senate passed a bill last week that would place term limits on leadership positions in the state Legislature. The bill (S.3556) would cap the tenure of the Senate's temporary president, the Assembly speaker and the minority leader positions in both houses at 12 years and any committee chairmanship to eight years, with the exception of the Rules Committee.

"This is the first step in building a better system of government," said Sen. Joseph Griffo, the Senate sponsor of the bill.
