Legislation requires college campuses to report violent crimes to police within 24 hours

By KELLY FAY

The Assembly passed a measure Monday that would require the notification of local law enforcement within 24 hours of a violent felony or missing person on a college campus.

According to Assemblyman Edward Braunstein, sponsor of the legislation, there is currently no protocol in place mandating that schools report violent crimes committed on campus to local authorities. As a result Braunstein, D-Queens, said many universities attempt to handle incidents in-house for fear of hurting the institution's public image.
