A Houston woman pleaded not guilty Monday to making fraudulent campaign donations to U.S. Rep. Michael Grimm, a Republican who represents Staten Island and parts of Brooklyn.
Diana Durand, 48 years old, was arrested in January and remains free on $50,000 bond. A federal indictment in the case was returned by a grand jury Friday.
After Monday's proceedings, Ms. Durand's attorney, Stuart Kaplan, said the charges stem from funds she tried to raise for Mr. Grimm's 2010 election. He said the two once had a long-distance romance and "our client is being prosecuted for her relationship, or former relationship, with the congressman."
Mr. Grimm's lawyer declined to comment.

Congressman Michael Grimm, who is facing a 20-count federal indictment on wire fraud, tax evasion and a slew of other charges, says hes actually a lucky guy.
Speaking on Geraldo Riveras WABC talk show this morning, Mr. Grimm told the radio hostwho has repeatedly and passionately defended the embattled Republican congressman in the wake of his latest scandalthat he was simply fortunate to represent his constituents.
The support has been overwhelming, he said. In all sincerity, I am one of the moststrange, it might sound bizarrebut I really am one of the luckiest members of Congress. And I say that I because I have salt-of-the-earth people in my district. Staten Island and southwest Brooklyn are just goodhearted, hardworking, regular, everyday people.

Democrat Domenic Recchia jabbed Congressman Michael Grimm at a campaign event in Brooklyn last night, offering some of his most pointed comments yet since the Staten Island Republicans indictment last month.
Visiting the home of sympathetic voters on what he has dubbed a Kitchen Table Listening Tour, Mr. Recchia asserted that Mr. Grimm could not adequately serve as a congressman after being indicted on wire fraud, mail fraud and various other charges in conjunction with a restaurant he once operated in Manhattan.
Im going to win because the people want change. They are tired [of] Michael Grimm being ineffective. Hes part of the problem, not part of the solution, Mr. Recchia told the Observer. All I know is that while Im out there talking to people and working for the people and addressing their issues and helping them resolve their problems, he has to be worried about his problems, okay, and thats going to take up a lot of time.
