Oneida Nation Representative, lawmakers say NFL should ban the 'R word'

By MATTHEW L. McKIBBEN

In the wake of Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling's alleged racist remarks publicized two weeks ago, four lawmakers have joined Oneida Nation Representative Ray Halbritter in an effort to stop sports teams from using dictionary-defined racial slurs as mascots.

Assemblymen Keith Wright and Karim Camara, and Sens. Joseph Griffo and George Maziarz, have introduced a resolution to ban the use of any offensive team mascots and quit using racial epithets for team names such as the "Redskins". The group referred to Washington D.C.'s professional football team as the "R" word, saying the term should be extracted from the public's vocabulary.
