Fairs curtailing swine shows in wake of disease concerns

By Jim Krencik and Matt Surtel Daily News Staff Writers

The summer fairs in Genesee, Orleans and Wyoming counties are enacting minor changes to help prevent the spread of a fast-moving swine disease which has already led to the cancellation of the New York State Fair’s sow and piglet exhibit.

There’s no danger to humans or other species. But only market hogs will be shown by local 4-H’ers, meaning those slaughtered and sold for meat.

So those you see will be destined for the dinner table.

“We’re making sure that every (swine) goes,” Genesee County Fairgrounds President Scott Adams said. “Butchers and meat markets will buy them right at the fair.”
