Dems take aim at GOP Rep. Michael Grimm, Tea Party at nominating convention

Tom Wrobleski

NEW DORP - Staten Island Democrats nominated candidates for state races on Thursday night, but their eyes were on the federal House battle between Rep. Michael Grimm (R-Staten Island/Brooklyn) and Democrat Domenic M. Recchia Jr.

Alluding to the 20-count federal indictment leveled against Grimm last week, state Sen. Diane Savino (D-North Shore/Brooklyn) told Dems at the Excelsior Grand, New Dorp, "Boy, are we excited now."

Grimm was indicted on charges of tax evasion, perjury and obstruction, with federal officials charging that he paid workers, including undocumented immigrants, off the books in a bid to hide the income.

Ms. Savino called Grimm a "wage thief."
