Legislation moves state forward on handicap signs

By MATTHEW DONDIEGO

Legislation introduced in both houses of the Legislature would update the signage for permits given to persons with disabilities in New York state.

Sen. David Carlucci and Assemblywoman Sandy Galef have proposed a bill (S.6846/A.8193) to revamp the Universal Symbol of Access pass, changing the icon from a person seated in a wheelchair to an icon of a person who appears to be moving the wheelchair forward. The legislation would also eliminate the word handicapped as a description for the special access permits.

The measure is already being implemented in New York City.
