Freeman staff

Unemployment rates in local counties were sharply lower last month than in April 2013, in some cases falling below 5 percent, the state Department of Labor said Tuesday.

Columbia County had the lowest local jobless rate in April, 4.7 percent, the department said. That was down from 6.2 percent in April 2013.

Dutchess was the other local county with an unemployment rate below 5 percent last month. Dutchess has 4.9 percent joblessness in April, down from 6.6 percent in April 2013, according to the labor department.
