Environmental groups aim to block pipeline

ALBANY >> Environmental groups promised Tuesday to block the proposed Pilgrim Pipeline from New Jersey to Albany, saying it is a environmental and safety hazard intended to ship Bakken crude oil arriving here by train.
In New York, the pipeline would go along the Thruway right of way, with connections to tank farms in Newburgh, the Selkirk railyard, and the Port of Albany. The project is a potentially huge source of revenue for the Thruway, which is trying to piece together the financing to pay for the new Tappan Zee Bridge now under construction.
We believe that this oil is dangerous no matter how you ship it and this pipeline cutting through the most densely populated region in the country and going past some of the most environmentally sensitive areas is a disaster waiting to happen, said Jeff Tittel, director of the New Jersey Sierra Club.
The proposed Pilgrim Pipeline will only add to potentially catastrophic scenarios by which this dangerous fuel can spill, volatilize or explode, said Roger Downs, Conservation Director of the Sierra Club Atlantic Chapter in New York.
