Deputy mayor casts doubt on rent freeze

Dana Rubinstein

"I don't think that anybody's view is that putting a rent freeze is good for the rental stock, any portion of the rental stock," said Mayor Bill de Blasio's deputy mayor for housing and economic development, Alicia Glen, this morning at the Harvard Club.

Earlier this month, the Rent Guidelines Board, which governs rent increases for nearly a million New Yorkers, voted to consider raising rents this year between zero and 3 percent on one-year leases.

The board won't make a final determination until June, but were the board to approve a zero percent increase, it would be making history.

The mayor controls the board and its chairwoman presented the proposal, which was in keeping with the mayor's campaign rhetoric.
