Gov. Cuomo selects former Buffalo-area Rep. Kathy Hochul as running mate

KEN LOVETT

After weeks of speculation, Gov. Cuomo announced via video at the state Democratic convnetion on Long Island that he has tapped former Rep. Kathy Hochul to be his running mate this year to replace Robert Duffy, who is not seeking a second term.

Cuomo praised Hochul's knowledge of upstate and what its needs are, particularly in western New York.

Hochul's name has been frequently mentioned as a likely candidate since Duffy announced he would not be on the ticket becasue of health reasons.

Being a woman helps with progressives, which has an uneasy relationship with Cuomo. And Cuomo has worked hard to gain support in western New York. Being a woman from Buffalo also givfes the ticket gender andController Thomnas DiNapoli and Attorney General Eric Schneiderman are all white males who hail from downstate.

Outgoing Lt. Gov. Bob Duffy plans to give his successor on the Democratic ticket an orthopedic car seat as she travels the state.

Joking aside, Duffy advised Kathy Hochul, the former congresswoman who hopes to succeed Duffy as lieutenant governor, to be an advocate for Gov. Andrew Cuomo and be loyal.

“I said from the day I was sworn in, my job is to serve the governor,” Duffy told reporters after a farewell speech at the Democratic convention in Suffolk County. “I never used this position for my political future. Be loyal, work hard and serve the people of this state. She’ll be a great candidate, she’ll be a great lieutenant governor.”
