Politicians, advocates press Mayor de Blasio to include universal free lunch in final budget

Time is running out for every city student to get a free meal.

Politicians and anti-hunger advocates are calling on Mayor de Blasio to include universal free lunch in his final budget, which will be adopted in a month, saying it will reduce the stigma kids face when they receive the free meal.

Public Advocate Letitia James, Council members, students and Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito - who has pledged $24 million in Council funds for free lunch - said discussions with the mayor and Chancellor Carmen Fariña are still underway to make the program a reality.
