New York Public Library Temporarily Closes Reading Room.

The New York Public Library’s majestic Rose Main Reading Room, which is nearly two city blocks long and has hosted scholars, students and authors for more than a century, has temporarily been closed after a piece of plaster fell from the ceiling this week.

The room, along with the Bill Blass Public Catalog Room, will remain closed for several weeks while both are thoroughly inspected to ensure that they are safe, Ken Weine, a spokesman for the library, said on Friday.

On Wednesday night, after the library was closed, a piece of plaster fell from the 52-foot-high ceiling.

The library, a Beaux-Arts landmark, was built in 1911, and in 1998 a renovation was completed that carefully restored the reading room to its original glory.
