Got the job, but the wait goes on

Casey Seiler

Albany

Those hoping for swift action from the new independent enforcement counsel at the state Board of Elections will have to be patient: Although she was approved by the Assembly and Senate last month, Risa Sugarman won't be able to officially start work until Sept. 1.

That's a week before voters head to the polls for legislative and local primaries, and a little more than two months before the general election. The timeline for the creation of the new watchdog entity was negotiated as part of the budget deal struck in March between Gov. Andrew Cuomo and legislative leaders.

Until September, Sugarman will remain in her current post as a deputy commissioner for the state Department of Taxation and Finance, running its criminal investigations division. She visited the Board of Elections' offices on Wednesday, but did not attend the regular meeting of the four commissioners — split between Democratic and Republican appointees — and department heads.
