Sources: Tentative agreement reached in the LIRR negotiations

NEW YORK (WABC) -- Sources tell Eyewitness News a tentative agreement has been reached in the Long Island Rail Road negotiations. A strike has been averted.

A statement from Gov. Andrew Cuomo Thursday said that the governor is planning an announcement on the LIRR talks this afternoon.

MTA and union officials were back at the bargaining table Thursday trying to head off a threatened strike Sunday of LIRR workers. Prior to the talks, union rep Andrew Simon sounded optimistic about the direction they were heading.

"We think we can get a deal done," said Simon. Asked about the potential for a strike, he said they were "very, very close to not having one." However, he also cautioned that they were "not there yet."
