Teachout petitions draw lone reviewer

Jimmy Vielkind

ALBANY—Zephyr Teachout says she's prepared for a challenge to her nominating petitions, but so far only one person has bothered to take a look.

According to the State Board of Elections, only one person has viewed the petitions, and no one has requested copies of them, since they were filed last week to secure a Democratic primary against Governor Andrew Cuomo. The law requires the valid signatures of 15,000 enrolled Democrats from congressional districts around the state. A general objection, which is little more than a one-sentence declaration, must be postmarked to the board today.

“I would be shocked if there wasn't some general objection and they would have another week to go to court," Teachout told Capital. "We're still planning for it. We have people lined up, ready to go and we're going to use it as an opportunity to talk both about the democratic process and the real issues in this state: public funding of elections, funding for public schools, fracking, our tax code and the environment.”
